WASHINGTON D.C. -- Using your cellphone behind the wheel could be against the law, that's if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way.

On Tuesday, the federal agency called for a nationwide ban on using cellphones or text messaging while driving, except for emergencies.

Congress would have to approve before the ban could go into effect.

The recommendation comes after the NTSB investigated a deadly accident in Missouri in August of last year.

The chain reaction crash killed two people and injured 38 others.

The board found that the driver who caused the accident was texting.
