(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)  Local law enforcement recognized their best Tuesday night at the Respect for Law Banquet sponsored by the three Optimist Clubs of St. Joseph.

Representatives from the St. Joseph Police Department, Buchanan County Sheriff's Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Missouri Western Campus Police were all thanked for the work they do everyday. The banquet was held at the Remington Nature Center.

"The things they do for our community, for the elderly people, they take care of them," said Larry J. Stobbs, a local Optimist Club member. "The month of May is Optimist International Respect for Law Month. We just like to honor every department. It makes them feel better that somebody is paying attention to what they're doing."

This is the first annual Respect for Law Banquet for the three local Optimist Clubs after a break of more than 25 years.

Organizers say they hope the event grows in years to come.

Award Winners:

Trooper Thomas J. Black, Missouri Highway Patrol
Lt. Shawn Collie, Buchanan County Sheriff's Department
Officer Todd Smith, St. Joseph Police Department
Cpl. Robert Bidding, MWSU Police
