(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Buchanan County Commissioners are working with architects to come up with a design for an expansion to the Law Enforcement Center.

The dormitory type expansion will add 46 additional beds for inmates who only need minimal supervision.

The jail currently holds 200 inmates.

It's not overcrowded but officials say the extra space is needed to separate inmates.

"Trying to get the females and the males separated which we have been doing but we're running out of  room. We want to keep the violent offenders from the not so violent offenders," said Ron Hook, Buchanan County Commissioner.

No word yet on when construction is set to begin or how much the project will cost.

Renovations are being led by The Goldberg Group- Architects, PC.
