(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) "It's bittersweet because we knew it was coming film and digital and this was going to happen, it just happened sooner than we would have liked," said Joshua Hall, general manager of Plaza 8 Theater.

After nearly 30 years, Plaza 8 Theater is closing it's doors for good.

Hall says the discount movie theater can no longer afford to keep the building open.

"It was just so much money and there's a lot of other things this place could be and there are people willing to pay to make that happen," said Hall.

Hall says the cost to upgrade to digital is in the millions.

The theater still operates using 35 millimeter film and projectors.

"Throughout the last year we've just seen big budget movie after big budget movie not come here after all because they weren't just putting out on film," added Hall.

Many people enjoy the Plaza 8 not only because of it's low prices but because it's been a staple in the community for decades.

Customers who've spent their entire lives in St. Joseph say they hate to see the theater close.

"When you have kids and you want to go to the movies this is the place to go so we're really going to miss it," said Susan Gentry.

Gentry still remembers coming to the theater as a teen and says it's apart of her childhood.

"High school and Friday nights, you'd come catch a movie here and always see movies here," added Gentry.

Hall says although he hates to see the theater close, he knows it's all for the best.

"Everybody goes to sleep eventually, even buildings. Some things have to suck so that other things can be cool and today really sucks but that means that the last 40 years were really cool," added Hall.

Talks are underway between city officials and a Kansas City area grocer to replace the theater with a Price Chopper.
City council members voted down tax incentives for the grocer in August.
