(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)Retailers say shoppers were ready for this year's Tax Free Weekend. They have a lot of items on their shopping lists.

"Basic denim, graphic tee's, long sleeve graphic tee's, even some school supplies and some shoes," said Alyssa Johnson, store manager at Children's Place.

Retailers are rolling out the red carpet to celebrate the Tax Free Weekend which started Friday. Many stores are even offering additional savings.

"We definitely beef up the staff and get more staff in here," said Wanisha Tubbs, manager at Champs Sports. "The shipment is kind of heavier so we get new products in."

"It's usually about a two week preparation," said Tyson Huff-Garza, manager at American Eagle. "I get almost all my staff in here, it's almost 20 people in the store at once. It sounds crazy but you have fitting room, you have cashier, just helping people find stuff."

Retailers expect even more shoppers to take advantage of the savings this year. Sales taxes have risen twice in the past year because voters approved a Public Safety Tax and an Ambulance Tax.

"The small tax was pretty high anyway, so now it's a little bit higher, so I think that's brought in a lot of people this year," said Huff-Garza. "For some of our jeans, that's almost $4. If you're buying for 2-3 kids, it's a really good savings."

It's not just locals taking advantage of the savings. Huff-Garza says he sees a lot of out-of-town shoppers.

"St. Joseph is kind of a melting pot with the Iowa and Kansas border," he said. "We get a lot of that in our store for sure."
