(ELWOOD, Kan.) A northeast Kansas girl is being honored as a hero for saving her neighbor's life.

Riverside Elementary honored 11-year-old Ashylnn Fox on Friday.

Fox was shoveling snow back in February when she noticed her neighbor's trailer on fire. She ran to the door to wake her neighbor who was inside sleeping.

Fox says it all happened so fast, she's just happy she was able to jump in and help.

"I just jumped in and knew that somebody was in the house and then after all that happened I was a little scared," she recalled.

Although Fox saw the ordeal as only helping a friend, firefighters say she was brave.

"For her to do what she did at her age was remarkable," said Tony Libel, Wathena fire chief.
Fox was given a plaque, a pass to swim this summer and a gift card. She plans to use the gift card to buy ice cream.
