(ST. JOSEPH, MO.) As temperatures rise this week, the St. Joseph Salvation Army has received a new shipment of fans to help those in need.

Westlake Ace Hardware recently hosted its first fan drive to benefit the Salvation Army.  Customers donated enough money to purchase more than 50 box fans.

The Salvation Army says the fans are critical for keeping those without air conditioning, or those on a fixed income, comfortable and safe during the hot summer months.

"I have people calling everyday asking if we have fans to give out. So, you know, there's a need out there and I'm just glad we got them to give out to them," added Teresa McDowell, a Salvation Army case worker.

The fans are now available to qualified applicants at the Salvation Army's Community Center on a first come, first serve basis.
