(SAVANNAH, Mo.) Savannah, MO has made a statewide list and it has community leaders excited.  The city has been ranked the 2nd safest city in the state of Missouri based on FBI statistics.

"They've been calling and saying they were surprised, they had never heard of this program before.  And I was kind of surprised myself because I didn't know we were on a list for this.  But it's a great honor for Savannah," said Savannah Mayor Connie George.

SafeWise ranked Savannah out of 50 Missouri cities.  Citizens are proud to be a part of something so big.

"It makes me feel really happy to know that this is a safe environment and I don't have to worry about anything going on bad.  [It's] pretty good," said Pet Salon Employee Maqenzy Lima.

Police Chief David Vincent describes Savannah as a tight knit community.  The police department has used this to their advantage to keep the city safe.

"Our biggest asset is most of our officers are part of the community, active in the community.  We have a great working relationship with the school district," said Savannah Police Chief David Vincent.

Law enforcement is always grateful of the cooperation from the community which helps things run that much smoother.

"The police department is only as good as the community allows us to be.  They are the hugest part of the safe city I think.  We're just an instrument of them," said Vincent.

The police department has put a lot of hard work and extra effort into the community and it has definitely shown.

"I lost my husband three months ago and I had calls from officers saying that they would come by and check around my house and make me feel safe.  And I do, I feel very safe," said George.

There are hopes that with this news, more business and even residents will be drawn to the city.

"In the bigger cities there's so much going on and we're fairly a sleepy town, so I think everybody will be safe," said George.

The rankings are based on FBI statistics of cities with a population of more than 4,000 people.
