(SAVANNAH, Mo.) We often hear about athletes signing on with colleges to take their skills to the next level, but it's not every day you hear about a signing for academics.

Wednesday was "signing day" for Savannah High School senior Brent Rosenauer. He accepted a scholarship from Missouri Western State University to join the speech and debate team.

Rosenauer has earned numerous awards for public speaking and is even ranked 7th in the state of Missouri for his speech and debate skills.

"Today shouldn't really be about me. It should really be about the idea that academics are a successful part of any person and that signing for an activity that isn't athletic should be just as important," said Rosenauer.

"There is a rigorous intellectual activity that high school and even college students compete in which devotes just as much time and commitment as athletics typically does," added Sohail Jouya, Missouri Western.

Rosenauer heads to Missouri Western this fall. He joins three others from Savannah who recently joined the speech and debate team.
