(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Hot dogs, refreshments, and staff welcomed hundreds of eager people to the two new elementary schools in St. Joseph.

"This is a celebration, absolutely," said Joey Austin, the Communications Director for the St. Joseph School District.

The St. Joseph School District hosted an open house on Tuesday to show off Carden Park and Oak Grove, the first schools built by the district in more than 40 years.

"We had people show up an hour before the open houses started, so we knew that the public was excited to see these schools," said Austin.

The open house was the first chance for the school's students to see inside.

"I like how it's so big and we can have our own space whenever we eat lunch," said Asenia Turner, a Carden Park 4th grader. "We can be spaced out."

At Carden Park Elementary, the kids noticed big spaces and beautiful views.

"I think that I may be day dreaming out the window," said Tommy King, a fifth grader at the school.

And at Oak Grove Elementary, the feeling was similar.

"It's more modern and it's much more colorful," said Kaitlyn Turnboo, a sixth grader at Oak Grove.

Turnboo is coming over from Lindbergh Elementary and says the schools so big she's afraid she might get lost.

"I'm a little nervous I won't find my way, but yeah I'm pretty excited," she said.

And the tour wasn't just for students. Even those that had no connection, came out to take a look.

"We've had kids, we've had neighbors, we've had moms, dads, aunts, uncles," Austin said. "We need to remember that we had local people build these schools and so everybody feels invested in these schools."

Two schools that the district says they're proud to show off.

"We're just so pleased to offer these educational facilities for the kids in the St. Joe School District," Austin said.

Both schools have some minor construction that still needs to be done.

The hardwood floors in both gyms are waiting to be installed and some landscaping needs to be finished.
