According to Troy's City Clerk Jane Boeh, the break also led the Troy School District to cancel classes on Tuesday.
City crews say they got the call around 8:30 Monday night and worked all night long to assess the main break and get water flowing again.
Crews had to cut through a foot of concrete to get beneath the roadway at Poplar and Main; they say the fluctuating temperatures are to blame.
City officials say a boil advisory is in effect now that utilities are turned back on.
