(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The technology many of us count on to download apps and surf the web is now helping those with hearing loss.

A new "smart" hearing aid connects to devices like iPad and iPhone, giving patients a sound that's closer to the real thing.

"I don't like to say, 'What? What?' to people," said Leslie Stevens, who suffers from hearing loss. "They also don't like me to say, 'What? What?"

Stevens has been wearing hearing aids for 15 years.

"You tend to, if you can't hear, you feel left out a little bit," he said.

Now, he's getting an even better sound thanks to new technology.

"It's like a computer," added Stevens.

Stevens is talking about the ReSound Linx hearing aid. It's been called the "world's smartest hearing aid."

"Anything that comes through your iPhone or iPad - like music, talking books or Facetime - comes into the hearing aid. So, they're a premier hearing aid that helps you hear sounds all around, but also that syncs with your Apple devices," said Diana Perrry.

Perry is a hearing instrument specialist at Quality Hearing Aid Centers in St. Joseph.

"You can adjust your hearing aids up and down," she pointed out.

She says the new technology provides numerous benefits for her customers.

"It's given people the freed to be able to adjust their own hearing aids," said Perry.

The design provides a hearing aid that's comfortable and nearly invisible.

"It fits in the ear very easy," said Stevens.

And, Stevens says, this new technology is something that keeps him from missing out.

"This makes it so that I have as close as possible to original ear hearing," he said.
