The Sports Crusaders camp helps kids score on the basketball court, but also teaches them life skills.
"We're about a relationship. We're about using sports as a common ground to share Jesus Christ," said Cynthia Walker of Sports Crusaders Ministries.
Whether kids are new to the sport or experienced, skill level is never a problem.
"We take kids right where they're at. So if they're just learning the sport, our Crusaders take them to a fundamental place and teach them how to dribble or how to do just the fundamental aspects of that sport. But then if we have kids that are more advanced, they get a lot of one-on-one critique, a lot of one-on-one coaching," said Walker.
The leaders of the Sports Crusaders love giving back, to be a part of the growth taking place in the lives of the kids. Between activities, leaders separate kids into groups to have a devotional.
"I thought it was a great opportunity to be able to use my talents and my faith and incorporate them together," said Sports Crusaders Team Leader Shea Roberts.
Much of the leaders' time has been dedicated to and focused upon the kids, the parents know that they don't have to give their time and have already shown their compassion.
"We've had plenty of cards sent to us saying how thankful they were for us just hanging out with their kids, how encouraged they were that we were so young but still able to share what we have for the Lord," said Roberts.
After 20 years, Sports Crusaders has impacted lives, not only the kids' but also the leaders and their parents.
"These kids love being here and I just love being a part of it," said Walker.
Since the start of Sports Crusaders, more than 40,000 campers have been reached.
The camp, which runs through June 13, offers basketball, cheerleading and soccer. The events are being held at Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church in St. Joseph.
