(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue held a free rabies clinic for area pets Thursday evening.

Residents with dogs and cats lined up at the Civic Arena to get their pets vaccinated.

The clinic was aimed to promote the importance of getting pets spayed and neutered.

Animal control received a grant to provide spay and neuter services to animals in the 64501 zip code.

They say most of their calls, about stray animals, come from that area.

"Our shelter sees many, many unwanted pets that come from the city. And, a lot of that stems from unwanted and unplanned liters. And so, we're really trying to encourage people to spay and neuter their animals," said Holly Bowie, Manager of St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue.

The spay and neuter vouchers are valid for 30 days.

It can be used at any vet in St. Joseph, as well as Angels Vet Express in Savannah.
