(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)  It's been eight months since the murder of 42 year old Amiee Kearns.

The St. Joseph native was living in an apartment in Ralston, Nebraska, a suburb of Omaha. In late October one night two men broke into her apartment, robbed her, then shot her to death.

It was a blow to her family living in St. Joseph.

"It crushed me, it tore me up," said Mark Hardin, one of three of Kearns' sons. "It still feels like a dream."

"It's been real hard on all of us," said Patrick Hardin, another son. "We would like to figure out why this happened, what reasons, like to know who done it and who's responsible. We don't understand."

A composite sketch of one of the suspects was released soon after the murder, but for the past eight months, there's been no break in the case.

"We're basically getting nowhere with (the police)," said Mark Hardin. "It's basically a joke. It's really discomforting."

"All they ever tell is is, oh, we got some good leads," said Patrick Hardin. "That's all we ever hear."

What's left for the family is an empty feeling of helplessness knowing there's nothing they can do.

SOT: Patrick Hardin: "If it would have happened here, we know enough people here, we could have figured it out," said Patrick. "We would have heard something. Up there, nothing."

"If we were around, it might have been prevented someway," said Mark.

There are now five grandchildren who will not be able to enjoy their grandma.

"She's never going to meet them," Mark said. "They're never going to get to know her. That's the hardest part. She was an awesome woman. She was a lot of fun and a great grandmother."

The family would like anyone who has any information about he case to call the Ralston, Nebraska police department.
