(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A St. Joseph man is now in custody of the St. Joseph Police Department for the abuse of a 2-year-old.

Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Dwight Scroggins has charged Ricky L. Wilson, Jr., 29, of assault in the first degree.

According to the St. Joseph Police Department, they responded to a call from Heartland Regional Medical Center around 1 a.m. on Jan. 18 about a possible child abuse case.

The child was transported to Children's Mercy in Kansas City due to injuries that were suspected to be consistent with child abuse.

The probable cause statement states the child had "numerous bruises and abrasions all over his body, and a pancreatic transection, which according to medical personnel is an injury obtained from blunt force trauma."

Court documents state that Wilson had custody of the child when the injuries were discovered.

Wilson has been in trouble before for unlawful use of a weapon and drug-related arrests.

His bond is set at $50,000. A court date has not been scheduled.

There is no word on the child's current condition.
