(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The St. Joseph School District is beefing up security at its two new schools under construction.

The district says both elementary schools will include state-of-the-art security features including keyless entry systems with built-in cameras and bullet proof windows.

Both schools will also have additional security cameras, exterior lighting and the ability to lock down in the event of an intruder.

School leaders say the extra security measures are needed to prevent vandalism and protect students in case of an emergency.

"Anything that we can do to try to beef up security, we typically do," said St. Joseph School District Director of Operations Chris Silcott. "It's coming through the main entrance and so we thought that if we could add another level to that that it would really be worth it too our staff and students to do that."

The school district also plans to add more security cameras to all existing schools.
