(CNN) Women who are exposed to a lot of pesticides may be putting their babies at risk for a form of autism.

According to a new study, women who lived within a mile of where pesticides are used on agricultural lands had a 60 percent higher risk of having children with a form of autism or other development disorders.

The study was done in California where there's 200 million pounds of pesticides used every year.

But critics say there is still no direct cause and effect.
