(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) St. Joseph's two new elementary schools opening next fall now have new names.

At the St. Joseph School District's Board of Education meeting Monday, Carden Park Elementary was announced as the name of the new school at 16th and Duncan Streets.

Oak Grove Elementary was selected for the new school at Bishop and Cook Roads.

The two names were among more than 140 originally submitted by the public. A committee of volunteers cut that list to five possible names for each school with board members voting on the final selections.

"Carden Park goes back to a gentleman who was on the railroad," said Dr. Fred Czerwonka, district superintendent. "It's ironic that we've called it Carden Park because that was the location. Oak Grove is the same way. As you drive out there it is a grove of oaks, so I think it's very fitting."

Construction of the two new schools has been slowed by bad winter weather. However, crews say they are committed to completing the projects by the start of school next fall.

The first day of classes for the 2014-15 school year will be August 18.
