(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A water main break created an unexpected morning repair job and a slower commute for drivers on Gene Field Road Wednesday in St. Joseph.

With warmer temperatures and recent rain, water main breaks are popping up all over the city.

"There'll be two times a year where we'll have water main breaks. That's when the temperature begins to change and really get hot in the summer and really get cold in the winter. So summer and winter are the times that we anticipate breaks," said Missouri American Water Senior Manager Wynn Morgan.

The timetable for repairs depends on the severity of the break but water must be shut off to prevent further harm.

"Public safety is affected when we have a water main break," said foreman Dan Wyland. "We want to notify our customers so they are aware and keeping our customers. And we don't want to affect our customers. That puts them out of business or shuts down a line for them. So economic development is important for us and keeping our customers supplied so they can keep their business running."

To report a water main break, call Missouri American Water at 1-866-430-0830.
