(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The St. Joseph YWCA has been awarded a $35,000 grant to raise awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer.

The Avon Breast Health Outreach program awarded the grant to the organization, and the money receive will help fund the Y's breast health program ENCOREplus.

ENCOREplus is a program that will educate area women and refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in the community. The program also provides free transportation.

Since 1994, the ENCOREplus program at YWCA St. Joseph has reached more than 16, 986 women with information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and has referred almost 4,985 women for mammograms and clinical breast exams.

In addition, 542 Latina women have also been served.
