Northwest Adds 3 in 2014 Signing Class

Kearney's Dray Starzl and Montana State transfer Vance Wentz join Lafayette's Xavier Kurth in the Bearcats' 2014 class.
(MARYVILLE, Mo) Northwest Men's Basketball head coach Ben McCollum has announced three additions as part of the 2014 signing class, according to a release on Wednesday.

The Bearcats have signed 6-8 forward Dray Starzl (Kearney, Mo.), brother of outgoing senior Dillon Starzl and pick up the services of 6-3 Montana State transfer Vance Wentz (Shawnee, Kan.). Wentz redshirted for Montana State last season and will have four years of eligibility in Maryville.

Those two join Lafayette standout Xavier Kurth, who signed his letter of intent in November. The senior put together another impressive season in 2013-2014, leading the Fighting Irish to a runner-up finish in Class 4 this season.

Starzl was an all-state selection under head coach Gary Belcher, now at Benton, averaging 14.0 points and 8.0 assists per game last season.

"Dray runs the floor well, sees the floor well, is a very good passer and can handle the ball," McCollum said in the release. "He is tough and will help our program in all aspects over the years. He rebounds and is a solid post scorer and can even step out."

Wentz led Shawnee Mission East to a fourth-place finish as a senior, earning second team all-state. He's also a former club teammate of reigning MIAA Freshman of the Year Zac Schneider.

"Vance has a high basketball IQ, he is tough and most importantly, he is a proven winner. He shoots the ball well and is a solid rebounder from the guard position."
