Bernadine Janeice (Bertelsen) Smith, 91, St. Joseph, MO, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
She was born on December 12, 1921, in Meadville, Missouri, to Frank and Ruby E. (Humphfres) Bertelsen. She was a graduate of Meadville High School.
Bernadine worked as a beautician; and was then employed by Swift & Co; Missouri Western State University; Moila; and retired from childcare at Methodist Medical Center. She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she was active in the Relief Society and in genealogy. She was a Cub Scout Leader, and Bernadine and her husband were members of the Community Choir for many years.
She married Harold Roger Smith on October 15, 1955 in St. Joseph, MO. He preceded her in death on July 7, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Link and Dean Bertelsen.
Survivors include two sons, Beric B. (Diane) Smith, St. Joseph, MO and Rodney R. Smith, Kansas City, MO; sister, Mercedes Hoffman, Atchison, KS; sister-in-law, Gerry Bertelsen, Greeley, CO; three grandchildren: Matt Henton, Brett Smith and Cory Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in St. Joseph. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Alzheimer’s Association.
