Alma L. Stephens, 92, of St. Joseph, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at Carriage Square Healthcare Center.
Alma was born on February 16, 1922 in Hemple, Missouri to Lucian and Beulah (Lewis) Frans.
She graduated from Gower High School and she worked for several fabric stores, retiring from Jo Ann Fabrics. Alma was a member of Faith United Church, Dorcas Women’s Fellowship Group, the O.W.L.S. Group, Koinonia Sunday School Class. She also was a member of the Oats Transportation Board and the Pony Express Association for the Blind.
Alma married Melvin E Stephens on April 25, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother, Kenneth Frans, sister, Virginia Morris and son-in-law, Rob Murphy.
Surviving family includes daughters, Linda (Roger) Antle, of Trenton, MO; and Deborah Sherard, of St. Joseph; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, sister, Datha Roberts, of Savannah; sister-in-law, Mary Stephens, of Hemple, MO and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services 2:30 PM Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.
Interment Keller Cemetery, Hemple, Missouri.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Tuesday at the funeral chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday evening.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hands of Hope Hospice, Faith United Church, the Pony Express Association for the Blind or the Dream Factory.
