Ellen was born on April 30, 1963 in Moline, Illinois. She was the middle child of Rev. Walter and Nadine (Oltjen) Burns. She graduated from Central High School of St. Joseph in 1981 and Bethany College of Lindsborg, KS in 1985. Ellen received a degree in education where she would go on to teach for 28 years. Her first two years were in Atchison, KS at Benedictine Parochial grade school where she would teach sixth grade. Then would move to teach in Wathena, which later changed to Riverside. There, she would teach fourth, second and finally kindergarten.
She was united in marriage to Patrick J. Wearing on July 27, 1987 in Salina, KS. The two would have one child, Emily Wearing of Saint Joseph. She was a big part of her daughter’s life as she helped chaperone activities and volunteer time helping with the musicals for her high school.
Ellen was an active member of her church First Lutheran in Saint Joseph. She spent many summers volunteering time for VBS, church council member and helped teach many Sunday school classes. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority. Ellen was an avid fan of Kansas State University and spent many Saturdays in Manhattan cheering on the Wildcats.
She is preceded in death by her father, both paternal grandparents, and both maternal grandparents.
She is survived by her husband Patrick Wearing, of Saint Joseph, their daughter Emily Wearing, of Saint Joseph; her mother Nadine Burns, of Saint Joseph; two brothers, Eric (Denise) Burns, of Saint Joseph, and his two children, Matt Burns, of Saint Joseph, Sarah Burns, of Savannah; David (Jennifer) Burns, of Lake Zurich, Illinois, and their sons, Ryan Burns, Bradley Burns and Nicholas Burns, of the home.
Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, First Lutheran Church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call after 5:00 P.M. Thursday. Mrs. Wearing will be removed from Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory to arrive at the church one hour prior to the service. The family suggests memorials to Open Door Food Kitchen of St. Joseph and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
