Herschell was born on March 21, 1934 in Atlanta, Missouri to Aaron and Hattie (Downey) Smoot.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Harold, Donald, Larry, Wilfred and George; 3 sisters, Barbara, Betty and Doreen. He was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ; member and current commander of Elmer Ellis Post #33 and a ham radio operator. Herschell was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. Herschell was a graduate of Bevier High School and was a Lineman for NW Electric Cooperative in Cameron, MO. On November 26, 1984, Herschell married Linda Bloss Hutton. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors: 6 daughters, Joyce (Mike) Loveridge, Kearney, Lola Toballic, Cameron, Cynthia Brookshier, Gower, Lila Combs, Trenton, Tina (Tim) Beers, Turney, Tammy Clough, Cameron; 2 sons, Tim (Michelle) Hutton and Tracey (Valerie) Hutton, Cameron; 25 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Services: 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at the First Christian Church, Cameron. Visitation: 6-8:00 PM, Monday evening at Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron.
