James W. Garrison, 92, Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 04, 2014, at a local hospital.
Jim was born May 30, 1922, near Faucett, Missouri, to William and Marie (Parker) Garrison and was reared in Saint Joseph from an early age. He attended Saint Joseph public schools and graduated from Central High School in 1940.
Jim served in World War II. He trained in the x-ray school at the Army Medical Center of O’Reilly General Hospital, Springfield, Missouri. He saw duty as a field x-ray and first aid technician. He completed his last sixteen months of service as an x-ray technician at the Air Force Base Hospital in Warner Robins, Georgia. Jimmy received an honorable discharge in March 1946, leaving that hospital without an x-ray technician for some time.
After military service, he attended Saint Joseph Junior College, graduating in 1948. He completed his studies at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While attending Drake, he worked as a dance instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio
in Des Moines and, for a brief period after graduation, at their Kansas City, Missouri, studio.
After college, he was an investigator and adjuster for Liberty Mutual Insurance at their Chicago office for several years. From 1953 to 1960, he was in the claims department of the Rock Island R.R. Company, residing and headquartering in Topeka, Kansas. He was an inspector and adjuster, handling claims against the railroad that occurred on the main line from Topeka through Kansas City, Trenton and on to Lineville, Iowa, as well as the line from Kansas City to St. Louis and also their operations in Saint Joseph.
Leaving the railroad, he worked two years as an adjuster with The Commercial Union, North British Insurance Company. Jimmy completed further college study to update his teaching certificate. He then taught social studies and Spanish at high schools for a year in Pleasant Hill, Missouri and two years in Northeast Missouri in the mid-sixties.
After teaching, he received training in Insurance Sales and was a Life, Health and Casualty Sales Agent for a General Insurance Agency in Kansas City, MO, for eight years. In 1974 he applied for and received appointment as a European Representative for Boston Mutual Life Insurance Company and received clearance by U.S. Armed Forces Europe Headquarters, to sell Life Insurance to American Service personnel first at Fulda, Germany and then at the Air Force Bases near Bitburg and Spangdalem, Germany, over a period of three and a half years.
He returned from Europe in 1978 making his home in St. Joseph. He continued work as an Insurance Broker, and in 1986 he completed study and passed examination to become a Registered Securities Broker. He worked as a Stock Broker for a firm in Long Island, NY, and later at their Brokerage office in Overland Park, KS, though residing in St. Joseph. Since 1995 he had been a Securities Broker affiliated with General Corp. of N. Kansas City, MO.
James was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma I. Wegenek.
Survivors include cousins, Susie (Frank) Mitchell, Charlene (Bill) Keck, Bill Garrison, Gloria (Arnold) Davenport, Paul E. (Mary) Garrison, Joe Garrison, Paul D. (Susan) Garrison, and many other cousins.
Services 11:00 AM Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment Ashland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at our chapel.
