Leon Mitchell, 93, St. Joseph, Missouri died peacefully Friday, June 20, 2014 at Heartland Regional Medical Center with his sons at his side.

Leon Mitchell, 93, St. Joseph, Missouri died peacefully Friday, June 20, 2014 at Heartland Regional Medical Center with his sons at his side.

He was born February 28, 1921 to Edward and Dessie (Summa) Mitchell in Gentry, Missouri.

He married Evelyn Harriett Berg on January 8, 1944. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1998.

Leon graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. While attending college he played the trumpet in a band traveling throughout the Midwest. He was a dedicated, independent, selfless person and a lifelong baseball player and fan.

Mr. Mitchell worked at the FBI office in Washington, DC before enlisting in the military. He proudly served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army, arriving in Iwo Jima on the third day of the invasion and served there for a year and a half.

Before his wife’s passing, he and Harriett enjoyed spending summers at their lake cabin in Wisconsin. He was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church; and a founding member of the St Joseph Gymnastic Society to later become the facility for the YMCA. He delivered Meals on Wheels for twenty-seven years until the age of 92. Leon was also a volunteer at the Heartland Health Information Desk and a bell ringer for the Salvation Army for many years.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eldon Mitchell; daughter-in-law, Gloria Mitchell; and grandchildren, James, Jack, and Mark Mitchell.

He is survived by three sons, Tom Mitchell (Janet), Brighton, Michigan, Rick Mitchell (Kelly), Columbia, Missouri and Bill Mitchell (Carrie), Eagan, Minnesota; and four grandchildren.

Services: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
