William “Billy” Burr Hughes, 89 peacefully passed away at the family home near Turney, Missouri on February 8, 2014 with his wife, Roberta Miller Hughes and son, Aaron Hughes at his side.

Billy Burr was born on November 7, 1924 to Byron and Ruby (Weaver) Hughes in Turney, MO.

Raised on the family farm in Clinton County Missouri, Bill attended the Pleasant Ridge country school and graduated from Cameron High School, Cameron, MO in 1943. After high school, Bill enlisted in the Army and served the bulk of his enlisted term during World War II in Seward, Alaska. After the war Bill enrolled at the University of Missouri, Columbia under the GI Bill.

Bill began courting Roberta Miller after taking her home from the Pearl Harbor Anniversary square dance in Cameron, MO on Dec. 6, 1946. They wed at the Methodist Church in Mabel, MO on June 12, 1949. They began their lives together with Bill continuing the family farming tradition.

In 1953, Bill and Roberta bought a farm adjacent to his parent’s farm near Turney, MO, where they have resided for over 60 years.

Bill and Roberta Hughes were faithful members of the Osborn United Methodist Church and they participated in a number of World Gospel Mission trips to Central and South America. Along with farming, Bill enjoyed flying his 1959 Cessna 150 airplane, which has been hangared at the farm along with a grass runway for over 40 years. Bill used his airplane to pull banners with phrases to let people know that Jesus is alive and loves them. While Bill was most content working on farm equipment, he truly enjoyed his family-particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Billy Burr is survived by his wife, Roberta Miller Hughes; four children, Frances (Michael) Clark, Cameron, MO, Donna (David) Henderson, Oklahoma, OK, Carl (Cheryl) Hughes, Kansas City, MO and Dale Aaron Hughes, Turney, MO; 10 grandchildren, Cara Clark (Todd) Hall, Jonathan (Bethany) Clark, Alicia Clark (Curtis) Marley, Rebecca Henderson (Dave) Campbell, Caleb Henderson, Carmen Henderson (Zevi) Goldbling, Melissa Hughes (Brenden) Callaway, Daniel Hughes, Abbey Hughes and Nicholas Hughes; 11 great-grandchildren, Geneva, Jacob, Anna and Henry Clark, Sophia and Truman Marley, Leah Hall, Judah, Malachi and Ezekiel Campbell, and Mordechai Goldbling.
