Eldred (Ed) Leroy Hale, Jr., died Saturday, October 26, surrounded by his family, in St. Joseph, MO after a long battle with lung cancer.

He was a quiet man- generally unassuming -but he had a sure strength about him as well! So very capable of doing, fixing, or figuring out anything and everything! He had a deep throated chuckle and an infectious grin that just drew you in and brought you along. He was brave as well. I say this because he fell in love and married his beautiful wife Cheryl with five- yes five- small children, but that didn't deter him for a minute! He spent his life sharing his love and his strength and his knowledge with Cheryl and those kids and even produced a daughter, Trisha too. He worked long hours providing for his family and never complained. He worked at Peachtree Door followed by Ken Smith Autobody, where he was a painter for over 30 years. But he knew how to relax and enjoy himself as well. He loved hunting and fishing and shared these skills with the next generation so that they could enjoy them too. Ed was an active member and president for many years at the 4-F Fishing Club where he loved to spend any spare time he had. He loved to spend his weekends there in his trailer or at many other various parks in the area where he would spend time with Cheryl and his very special friends camping. He also loved to travel. He and Cheryl had many wonderful travel adventures together including; The Caribbean, Alaska, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Africa, Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon, and Rocky Mountain National Park. He took a vivid interest in photography and took thousands of pictures of the trips he enjoyed so much!We all got to enjoy his grilling skills. It was once said by his neighbor when he first moved in across the street from the family "That neighbor of mine is a grilling fool! He's even out there in the rain with an umbrella grilling!" But he could flip a mean burger for sure! Ed also loved gardening and then canning the bounty of his efforts. He made a mean salsa too! Cooking in general was one of his favorite things to do. He made many pounds of deer sausage every year, which was a huge family favorite! We will never know this side of heaven why someone with so much left to give was taken so young. We can only console each other with memories of a man so admired, respected, and so well loved!Surviving is his wife of 38 years Cheryl, daughter Tami Detwieler and husband Doug, daughter Tracy Miller, son David Conroy and wife Sherry, daughter Kimberly Maag and husband Kris, daughter Dena Goolsby, and daughter Trisha Hale.
