Mendell Athen, 93, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014 at a local hospital.
Mendell was born August 16, 1920 in Atchison County, MO to the late Alfred Carl and Nellie (Zuck) Athen. He was a graduate of Hamburg High School.
Mendell married Wilda Goings on February 15, 1942 in Julian, Nebraska, sharing over 72 years together.
In 1951, they purchased a farm in Columbia, MO and lived there for over 30 years. After selling the farm, he worked in Sales for Northrup, then for Asgrow Seed Corn Company.
In 1966, they moved to Maryville for 3 years before returning to Columbia, where Mendell was named Regional Sales Associate.
After his retirement they moved to Tucson, Arizona, where they owned and operated a woodcraft business. For over 30 years, they traveled to craft shows throughout the Western United States.
In 1994 they moved to Mound City before making their home in Savannah 2 years ago.
Mendell was an avid Royals, Chiefs and MU fan. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting , boating and landscaping.
Mendell formerly attended the Mound City Christian Church and was a firm believer in God. He was a family man and was dearly loved by his grandkids.
Mendell was proceeded in death by a son, Larry Athen.
Survivors include; his wife, of the home; 3 children, Dennis (Nancy) Athen, Buffalo, MO; Gaylene McCart, Humble, TX and Kent Athen, St. Joseph, MO; 6 Grandsons, 2 Granddaughters and 5 Great-Grandchildren.
Visitation will be held after 12:00 PM Wednesday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday. Services 11:00AM Thursday at our Chapel. Mr. Athen will be cremated following the service.
In lieu of flowers his family has requested memorial donations to the American Diabetes Association.
