(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) After the Royals recorded 14 runs on 22 hits in two straight wins at Busch Stadium, Adam Wainright proved to be the antidote, at least for eight innings.

The Cardinals' ace struck out eight batters, but a bobbled strikeout pitch from Yadier Molina led to a two-run night for Kansas City to send Wednesday night's game to extras. St. Louis still managed to plate three runs in the 11th to beat the Royals 5-2 at Kauffman Stadium.

The bobbled ball allowed Eric Hosmer to reach first, leading to the Royals (28-31) loading the bases with no outs. Salvador Perez scored him by grounding into a fielder's choice.

Lorenzo Cain tied the game with an RBI single. Trevor Rosenthal came back to strike out Mike Moustakas and force Alcides Escobar to line out to short to prevent a walk off win.

Wainright allowed just four hits and two walks over his eight innings. Sam Freeman (1-0) earned his first victory with one perfect inning of work.

Kelvin Herrera (1-2) surrendered an RBI double to Matt Carpenter and a two-run single to Allen Craig that proved to be the difference.

Jason Vargas struck out three and gave up nine hits over his eight innings of work.
