(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) District baseball begins this weekend, and for Lafayette, it'll be the final stretch of games for their biggest hitter, Jarrod Byous.
But the Irish are already grooming his replacement.
Byous has left his mark on the Lafayette baseball program, leading the team on the mound and in the batter's box.
"He understands where he is in the count," Lafayette baseball coach Jason Hale said. "He's not afraid to take a pitch, and he's a .500 hitter. It doesn't get any better than that."
This weekend, the Lafayette senior plays in his final district tournament, but that won't end the Byous run on the north side.
"I was always hoping to get a chance to play with my brother, and I know my dad was too," Jarrod said. "It's just worked out for both of us that we got to play on the same field together."
For Jarrod, and freshman brother Nate, 2013 has allowed them to stand side-by-side on the diamond for the first time in their baseball careers. And the time together has allowed Nate's game to mature.
"He's really taught me a lot, and it's just nice to have the chance to come out here and actually get to play with him," Nate said.
"Any time you get the opportunity to play with blood, it makes it that much better," Hale said.
But the family feel at Lafayette stretches beyond just the siblings.
"We are a very tight family, and it's just nice to see everybody have each others back and pick each other up when they're down," Jarrod said. "It's really nice to see."
"For all of these boys, it's a second family; we spend so much time together," Hale said.
Now as Jarrod searches for the right fit to continue playing baseball at the collegiate level, it's up to Nate to keep the Byous name thriving at Lafayette.
"It's been fun," Nate said. "There are a lot of great memories to take out of it. He's taught me a lot, and it's been great."
Lafayette will play Cameron in the first round of districts Saturday at Missouri Western.
