Belcher was formally introduced as the new boys basketball coach at Benton High School on Thursday. The former Indian beat out 14 other applicants to earn the spot left open by George Ross Jr. last month.
Lured heavily from Kearney by girls head coach Brett Goodwin and athletic director Mike Ziesel, Belcher takes over a program that boasts just 11 wins over the past three seasons. He brings a track record of rejuvenating clubs, claiming three district championships with Warrensburg after taking over a one-win team.
He led Kearney to four district titles and a pair of Show-Me Showdown appearances, finishing second in Class 4 in 2009 before claiming the state crown in 2010.
"My time at Kearney was a good time. I was very blessed with the athletes I had there," he said. "We did some good things, and I'm looking forward to trying to duplicate that or even go above that during my time here at Benton."
