The Mules host the defending Class 1 State Champion Hamilton Friday.
"Our goal coming in was to be 2-0 when we get to conference play," Thompson said. "And we were kind of hoping they would be too, to be honest with you."
In 2012, the Hornets came away with a 32-14 win over the Mules in week three, but that setback doesn't overshadow what Thompson's done in Lathrop.
After winning just two games total between 2008-2009, the Mules have won 15 in Thompson's first two years.
But that lone conference loss in 2012 to Hamilton -- a team that's won 17 games in a row dating back to last season -- still remains.
"We played well against Hamilton last year early -- at least we had some moments," Thompson said. "We feel like we could have played better, and we kind of wanted to come in undefeated, have them be undefeated, everyone play their best game and see who is the best football team."
The Hornets proved to be the class of the KCI by winning the conference in its first year as a member. Now the blue and gold have a big target on its back as its second cycle through the KCI begins, and they aren't taking Lathrop lightly.
"It's a heck of a first (conference) game, but we have to take it like we're just playing another game," running back Kellen Overstreet said. "We can't get too ahead of ourselves."
And despite three state titles in the last four years -- and a 2-0 start this season -- Hornets head coach Dave Fairchild isn't satisfied with what he's seen so far.
"We've got a lot of work to do yet. We did improve significantly last week from week one with our assignments, and so on. I think we're slowly getting better, but we've got a long ways to go if we want to be a very good football team," Fairchild said.
The high school football regular season is still young, but there will be a playoff atmosphere in Lathrop on Friday.
"I don't think we're lacking for confidence," Thompson said. "I know Hamilton's not lacking for confidence. It will be two physical, confident football teams to take the field, and somebody has to win and somebody has to lose."
