"It was a tough loss," junior Drew Cortez said. "Now that we realize we can play them again, our mentality's going to be different coming in. We want revenge."
Last Friday's district-clinching win meant a rematch in the same place where Lafayette's 2012-2013 campaign ended. The Fighting Irish will play Liberty North at 7:45 on Wednesday at Staley High School.
It's a long-awaited meeting not just for basketball holdovers, but several students who suffered season-ending losses to Liberty North in football over the last two years. The Eagles blanked Lafayette 35-0 in the Class 4 District 8 championship back in November. They also stopped the Irish in the first round of districts in St. Joseph in 2012.
"It's just kind of a pride thing. Football, you didn't play your best. You lost to them twice in a row in basketball and football."
"We want our revenge," senior Cody Massey added. "Especially me and Drew and some of the other football players who lost to them. Two years in a row they ended our football season, then our basketball season last year."
"We fully expect to make a run to Columbia. We feel good about our chances as long as we just keep playing like we do."
