(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) Trailing Stanberry by five points inside seven minutes left in the 8-man state championship, North Andrew senior Quayde Bauman broke a 39-yard touchdown run giving the Cardinals a 16-13 lead they wouldn't let go.

North Andrew (12-0) beat Stanberry (12-1) by that score to claim its first state championship since 1997, and avenged a loss to the Bulldogs in the 2012 title.

After Bauman's go-ahead score, Stanberry had two opportunities to take the lead back, but the Bulldogs ensuing possession after the touchdown ended with the Cardinals defense coming up with a stop on fourth down. Stanberry made a charge on their final drive of the game, but on fourth and long with 30 seconds left, Ike Heddinger's pass fell incomplete.

North Andrew first got on the scoreboard sacking Heddinger in the end zone for a safety on the first play of the game. The Stanberry quarterback put the Bulldogs ahead with a touchdown run with 6:06 left in the first quarter.

Nate Atkins hit Austin Dalbey with 1:57 left before halftime to give the Cardinals an 8-7 lead at the break.

Stanberry went back on top 13-8 late in the third when Nate Luke broke his first touchdown run of the game, but Bauman put North Andrew back ahead midway through the fourth.

The Cardinals championship comes 20 years after the school won its first 8-man title, and it's their first under second-year head coach Jonathan Schoonover.
