Senior pitcher Jackie Bishop did everything she could to give the Griffs an advantage in the opening contest. The Kirksville native didn't allow a hit through the first 7 2/3 innings. The Bronchos finally broke through with back-to-back doubles and a single to take a 2-0 lead with two down in the eighth.
UCO starter Kalynn Schrock matched Bishop giving up just one hit with 10 strikeouts for the complete game win.
Griffon first baseman Tiffany Gillaspy had the only hit for either side through seven innings with a single in the fourth, but she was stranded at first.
Bishop's final line was eight innings pitched, 11 strikeouts, three hits, one walk and two earned runs.
"I knew their batting averages were pretty high, and I knew I was going to have to come out and do the best I could and have a day," Bishop said. "The first mistake or the first hit was going to win that ball game, and unfortunately it didn't go our way."
She got the chance to redeem herself in game two.
Janie Smith started the final contest of the day for Western giving up three runs in four innings.
Smith's offense put her in position to win with a five-run fourth, capped off by a three-RBI double by Gillaspy.
Bishop entered in relief in the fifth inning and recorded the save giving up one run in the final three innings.
The Griffons advance to the MIAA Tournament starting Thursday in Overland Park, Kan. Western will face the sixth seeded Northwest Bearcats.
