(ST. JOSEPH) After their losing streak reached a season-high five games, Missouri Western slugged their way to a 12-11 win to salvage the finale of a four-game series with Washburn at the MWSU Spring Sports Complex on Monday.

Washburn (7-5, 7-5) hung the first two runs of Game 1, the second of which began a string of three straight unearned. Three of their four runs came off Griffon starter Mason Queen (1-2), who gave up five hits and struck out a pair of four innings.

David Chew scored on a passed ball to cut the Ichabods' lead in half in the second frame. Washburn got a pair back before MWSU spent the final three innings trying to rally.

The second passed ball by Eric Schmid (1-1) allowed Cody Childs to touch home to make it a 4-2 game in the fifth. Chew pulled the Griffons (7-8, 5-5) within one in the seventh, driving in Ryan Degner with a double. St. Joseph native Will Carter grounded out with Chew on third to end the game.

Washburn started even hotter in the second contest, tagging Dylan Roades for four runs in the opening frame.

After Jake Schrader responded in the bottom of the first with his fifth homer of the year to cut it to 4-2, the Ichabods padded their lead with another three runs before another Griffon would cross the plate.

Childs blasted a solo homer in the second before MWSU erupted for five runs in the fourth to grab a 9-7 advantage.

Washburn countered with a three-run fifth inning to reclaim the lead until the bottom of the frame. Chew knocked a three-run homer to give the Griffons a 12-10 lead. The combination of Matt Russell, Grant Woods, and Tyler Sanders held held the Ichabods to just one run over the last three frames. Sanders picked up his second save of the season.

Banks Born recorded his first victory after giving up a hit and a walk over one inning of work.
