(ST. JOSEPH) After polishing off their first winning season since 2006, sixth-seeded Missouri Western will kick off the MIAA Volleyball Tournament Tuesday night at No. 3 seed Nebraska-Kearney.

This also marks the first tournament berth for the Griffons (16-14, 9-7) since 2006.

Marian Carbin has led MWSU back to this point in her fifth year with the program and first as head coach. This comes despite losing last season's kill leaders, Jessie Thorup (injury) and Stephanie Hattey (team departure), early in the year.

The Griffons lost in Kearney in straight sets (25-21, 25-10, 25-15) a month ago, but have won the second meeting against every MIAA foe other than fifth-ranked Central Missouri.

"We compete night after night against some of the top-ranked teams in this country," Carbin said. "To come out 9-7 and with a winning record speaks highly and I think it just affirms what I've been saying all year about how dangerous this team is. For our record to show that is something myself and this team is very proud of."

MWSU and Nebraska-Kearney (26-5, 12-4) get underway at 7 p.m. at the Health & Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.
