Griffons Beat Northwest, UCO to Reach MIAA Semifinals

(OVERLAND PARK, Kan.) Missouri Western combined for 26 runs on 21 hits on Thursday, scoring a 16-7 win over Northwest and a 10-1 victory over Central Oklahoma to reach the MIAA Tournament Semifinals.  

Jackie Bishop (23-8), named MIAA Pitcher of the Year prior to the opening round, picked up both wins as she surpassed the Griffons' single-season strikeout record of 244, which she set two years ago. 

Northwest 7, Missouri Western 16

Janie Smith took the mound in the first game against the Bearcats, giving up a first-inning two-run home run to Stephanie Mark. The teams combined for eight home runs in the game, all by different players.

Taszia Roseberry, Jill Henry, and newly-crowned MIAA Freshman of the Year Chantel Adams also went deep for Northwest. Bre Fleschner, Sydney Washington, Michelle Stevenson, and Tiffany Gillaspy homered for MWSU (36-16, 17-9). 

The Bearcats (20-30, 13-15) led 6-5 in the bottom of the third until Brooke Schaben on an error by Adams for the first inside-the-park score. 

Gillaspy knocked a go-ahead single in the fourth before the Griffons exploded six runs in the fifth. Paige Blythe (1-5) took the loss after allowing three runs over two frames. 

Bishop pitched the final three innings, giving up a run on three hits while recording two strikeouts. 

Gillaspy slapped a three-run homer to mercy rule Northwest in the sixth. 

Central Oklahoma 1, Missouri Western 10

The Griffons got to UCO pitcher Kalynn Schrock quickly, plating four runs in the first inning of the quarterfinal. MWSU plated the first six runs of the game, booting Schrock (24-7) after just three frames. 

Bishop gave up her only run in the fifth as she recorded eight strikeouts, putting her season total at 250. 

MWSU tagged reliever Amanda McClelland for another five runs in the final 2 1/3 innings, capped off by Washington's three run homer, her second of the day, to again earn a sixth-inning mercy rule. 

The Griffons will face Northeastern State at 3 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals.
