Griffons Swept in Doubleheader to Start Series with Washburn

(ST. JOSEPH) Missouri Western's losing streak as they hit four games as they hit the diamond for the first time in March on Sunday, losing 2-1 and 8-2 decision to Washburn to begin a four-game series.

The Ichabods' Parker Gibson struck in the first inning with an RBI single off Jake Jones (1-1). The Griffon righty went four innings, giving up three hits while striking out a pair. 

Trevor LaHonta laced a single to short in the third that crept past Cole Gardner's glove, allowing Mitch Thorman to score the tying run. 

It was short-lived as Kyle Carnahan shot a single into right to give Washburn a permanent 2-1 advantage. The Griffons (6-7, 4-4) managed just four hits. 

David Chew struck first in game two with a triple down the right field line. It was the only run surrendered by Washburn's Taylor Gentry (1-0) who worked six innings, striking out five and allowing five hits. 

Washburn (6-4, 6-4) scored the next eight runs, beginning with a trio of scores in the fifth. All runs were credited to freshman Tyler Tuepker (1-1). Thorman scored one run in the ninth as LaHonta hit into a double play.
