(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Missouri Western solidified it's place in the upcoming MIAA Tournament as the three seed with two wins Saturday.

The Griffons (28-17, 24-14 MIAA) beat Fort Hays 1-0 and 7-4 to complete a four-game sweep.

Ryan Degner was the hero in the early contest.

Still scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning, Trevor LaHonta singled to right and was moved up to third on a Dylan Koch bunt. Degner followed with a line drive base hit scoring the game-winning run.

Jake Jones quieted the Tigers' bats allowing just two hits, a walk and eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Mason Queen pitched 1 1/3 spotless innings to get his third win of the season.

Western pieced together game two using five different pitchers with none recording a full three innings of work.

Mark Spreckels got the start, and was pulled after giving up a run on three walks and a hit batter in just 2/3 of an inning. Tyler Sanders relieved Spreckels, and allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Tyler Tuepker, Banks Born and Queen combine for no runs, one hit, one walk and one strikeout in the final 5 2/3 innings to keep the Griffons within striking distance.

Hays led 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Western rallied for five runs. Koch had the go-ahead hit with a two-RBI single.

Koch went 2/3 with two RBI and two runs scored. David Chew was 1/2 with two RBI and two walks.

Western will host its opening series in the conference tournament beginning Thursday.
