(KANSAS CITY, Kan.) Missouri Western's lineup flexed the talent against Central Oklahoma that earned them All-Conference honors early Monday.
The Griffons used another strong performance from MIAA Pitcher of the Year, Brandon Simmons, to trounce the Bronchos 9-3 in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals. The win is Western's 38th of the year, a school record, and the 400th career victory for head coach Buzz Verduzco.
Western (38-8) will play Missouri Southern Friday at 11 a.m. in the semifinals.
The Griffons hung the first seven runs of the game, all in the first four innings. Kyle Simpson and Spencer Shockley accounted for the first two RBI in the opening frame.
Bubba Dotson then began to widen the gap for the Griffons with a three-run home run in the second off UCO's Edgar Lopez (8-4). The Bronchos' (30-18) hurler lasted only 2 1/3 innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits.
Simmons (11-0), meanwhile, allowed a single run through eight innings, fanning five in the process. Cesar Wong finally responded with that lone run in the sixth, knocking a sacrifice fly to right.
Trailing 9-1, the Bronchos hung two more in the ninth off Western's Jake Jones. Logan Hollingsworth then came on to record the final out.
