(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The Mustangs kicked off the 2013 baseball season Friday night with a 7-0 win over Rossville.
St. Joe (1-0) received seven shutout innings from starting pitcher Aaron Baker as he dominated the Rattlers.
Baker gave up just two hits, while striking out nine in the win.
Offensively, a pair of Mustangs newcomers had big nights.
Michael Schulze and Grant Fink had three hits apiece, and Fink also drove in three runs as St. Joe pulled away late in the game.
The Mustangs grabbed the momentum in the first inning when first baseman Kris Koerper doubled to deep left field scoring Schulze.
Shane Segovia followed with a RBI-ground out, then a run-scoring single from Fink to put St. Joseph ahead 3-0.
Koerper scored for a second time on a wild pitch to open up a four-run lead.
That was plenty for Baker, a pitcher in his second season with the Mustangs.
He picked up where he left off in 2012 when he posted a 7-2 record with a 2.06 ERA.
On Saturday, Mustangs manager Matt Johnson turns the ball over to Brandon Simmons as he gets his first start with the defending MINK League Champs.
