(CHILLICOTHE, Mo.) After losing by a combined score of 24-3 at Clarinda and Sedalia on Monday and Tuesday, St. Joseph rebounded with a 7-6 road win Wednesday night.
Jerad Hawkins picked up his third win of the season giving up four runs in seven innings of work. He struck out two and walked just one as the Mustangs (22-15) stayed two games ahead of the Mudcats in the standings, and two games behind the A's.
After dropping two games in a row by double-digits, St. Joseph didn't give Chillicothe any time to get ahead. Griff Gordon and Zac Johnson both drove in a run in the first inning to give the Mustangs an edge.
Brandon Huske's lone hit of the game came in the second, but it broke it open. Huske ripped a two-run triple, and later scored on a balk to prop St. Joe up with a 5-0 lead.
Chillicothe came back with a run in the third, and three more in the fourth, but St. Joe opened the lead up again in the sixth.
Payton Scarbrough scored on a fielder's choice, and Joe Koerper drove in Huske to make it a 7-4 game.
Jarrod Miller gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but managed to finish the game and pick up his first save of the season.
The Mustangs meet up with the Mudcats again on Thursday at 7pm at Phil Welch Stadium.
