(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Playing for a second straight MINK League Championship in front of their home fans, the St. Joseph Mustangs found a way to fight back from three different deficits to beat Sedalia 7-6 in 10 innings.
The final comeback came in the final frame. Down 6-5, the MINK League's RBI leader, Kyle Simpson doubled home Saulyer Saxon to tie the game. An intentional walk to Mark Robinette followed by a fielder's choice that the Bombers could not record an out on loaded the bases.
Jordan Guida then hit into a fielder's choice to third baseman Kyle Hardy. Hardy bobbled the grounder, and his throw home was not in time to get pinch-runner Patrick Burkhart.
The run gave St. Joe the walk-off win, and an on-field celebration ensued.
The Bombers jumped out to an early lead scoring a run in the second inning, and two more in the fourth.
Starting pitcher Cody Cunningham then settled down to throw three scoreless innings in a row.
Tanner Luback put the Mustangs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. The catcher hit his first home run of the season over the wall in center field.
St. Joseph carried the momentum into the sixth inning as Simpson drove in Saxon and Tim Caputo with a double. Kris Koerper hit into a double play two batters later scoring Simpson to take a 4-3 lead.
The Bombers drove in two more runs in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead, but the Mustangs responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Saxon score another one of his three runs on another ground out from Koerper to tie the game at 5.
Chris Green was the winning pitcher despite giving up an unearned run in the top of the 10th. He gave up one hit and one walk in an inning of work.
Cunningham gave up five earned runs while striking out five in seven innings.
St. Joe began the MINK League Championship Series with a 10-6 loss in Sedalia, but the Mustangs bounced back at Phil Welch Stadium to win games two and three for the title.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to the Regional Tournament which will be held at Phil Welch later this week.
