"This is like my second home. It makes you relive the memories, so it's great to be back," Robinette said.
St. Joe manager Matt Johnson made the call in the off-season to the former corner infielder offering him a spot on the staff as hitting coach.
Robinette promptly accepted.
As a player for Johnson, he was a centerpiece for the Mustangs in 2011 and 2012 that won MINK League titles. Robinette brings that winning attitude back to Phil Welch Stadium.
"His last year he was here, he was an extreme leader for us," Johnson said. "He really took it on his shoulders to get us to the World Series, win a league championship and fill that void."
After making a trip to the NCAA Super Regional with Oklahoma State, he returned to the Mustangs to carry on the tradition of former players joining the coaching staff.
"Everybody wants to come back to St. Joe," Robinette said. "I think that's what's special about this program. Nobody just wants to be here for a year and go. I mean guys come back year in and year out, and that's what makes this program special."
He joins St. Joe at a key time.
Robinette was a .337 hitter with 27 doubles in two seasons with the Mustangs, while the current club was last in the MINK in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage through 16 league games.
"There's a lot of talent here, I just think they haven't gotten the bats going quite yet, but that's baseball for you," Robinette said. "It goes in streaks. We just have to keep working and get that competitive edge going. Hopefully they can string something together."
"We're really excited to have him back kind of pushing these guys maybe a little bit further than we've been able to push them, and really show them what it's like to be at that level of baseball," Johnson said.
St. Joseph's hoping Robinette can bring that past recipe for success back to this year's ball club.
"The two years that we won the MINK, we had guys stepping up one through nine and on the pitching staff. Guys played their role and played them great," Robinette said of past teams. "And I think some of these guys can step up, hopefully provide an example for other guys."
