(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The Mustangs staple at third base during the last two seasons was Brent Seifert.

But as the Cameron native did not return for the 2012 season, it opened the door for Shane Segovia.

Segovia knew that replacing a local star like Seifert though, would not be easy.

"He was the dude," Segovia said of Seifert with a laugh.

During the first few games as the Mustangs starting third baseman, the future Missouri Tiger struggled. He did not record a hit through his first 15 at-bats of the season.

But he pressed on.

"Just trying to do too much," Segovia said. "That's where I feel like I was at at the beginning of the summer, and now I'm just getting that comfortable feeling at the plate."

Manager Matt Johnson says the Sinton, Texas native knows when to pick his pitch.

"He's very aggressive at the plate in his counts understanding how to hit," Johnson said.

The stats agree. Segovia's batting average through Wednesday's win over Omaha is up to .364.
