(MARYVILLE, Mo.) The Northwest Missouri State women's golf program has turned to Bearcat Basketball to find its second leader.

Men's basketball assistant Andy Peterson has been named head golf coach, the school announced on Monday. He will maintain his duties with the basketball team as well as serving as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Facilities.

Beginning in 2007, the golf program is the youngest in the athletic department. Pat McLaughlin led the team since its inception until retiring this summer.

"It's still in its development stages. We're six years in, but we're still trying to gain momentum, so it's sort of fill the role as needed," Peterson said.

Peterson, a former student-athlete at Northwest, spent one year as the golf coach at Southwestern Community College (IA) from 2010-2011 before returning to Maryville to join Ben McCollum's staff. He knows he will miss some time with Bearcat hoops, but has McCollum's blessing.

"My biggest asset, and McCollum would say this too, is practice. If I can get to as many of those as I can, he won't be too upset."
